Visitor handbook

Plan a calm safari day

A practical handbook for first-time visitors. Most people spend 5 – 7 hours at the park — long enough for two safari modes plus the keeper talks.

Best time

Best time of day

Animals are most active in the cooler hours — the first hour after opening and the last two hours before closing. The midday lull is real, especially in summer. Arrive at opening if you can.

Getting here

By car or public transport

From the A58 motorway take exit 9 (Hilvarenbeek). The park is well-signed once you turn south. There is a large free car park on site. By public transport: train to Tilburg, then bus 142.

Auto-safari

Driving the auto-safari

Drive slowly (max 20 km/h). Stay in your vehicle. Windows closed in the predator zone. Convertible roof must stay closed throughout. The route takes 60–90 minutes if you stop to watch.

Family

With children

The boat safari and the walking trail through the smaller-animal section are the children’s favourites. Buggies are allowed on the walking trail. The lemur enclosure is a reliable hit with under-tens.

Accessibility

Accessibility

The walking trail is step-free and stroller-friendly. The auto-safari works for any vehicle that can drive at 20 km/h. The boat is wheelchair-accessible via the ramp at the main jetty. Adapted toilets are at the entrance and at the central plaza.

Food

Food & rest stops

Two restaurants and a number of kiosks across the park. Picnicking is allowed at the central plaza tables. Outside food is not permitted on the auto-safari for animal-safety reasons.

Weather

Rain plan

The park is open in all weather. The auto-safari, the bus and the boat all run in light rain. On heavy-rain days, the keeper talks indoors at the elephant house and the lemur dome remain the best activities.

Photography

Photography

No special permits required for personal photography. Drones are not allowed. A telephoto lens (200–400 mm equivalent) is useful for the auto-safari; on the walking trail a wide angle is enough.

Stay over

Stay overnight

Adjacent to the park is the Safari Resort with lodges, tented camps and the Karibu hotel — for visitors who want to hear lions roar at night.

A suggested day at the park

A relaxed itinerary that fits most family visits.

  1. 09:30 — Arrival. Park, collect the paper map at the main entrance, check the daily keeper-talk schedule.
  2. 09:45 — Auto-safari. Best done first, when the animals are still cool and active. 60 – 90 minutes.
  3. 11:15 — Coffee break. At the central plaza, plan the rest of the day around keeper talks.
  4. 11:45 — Walking safari. Lemurs, monkeys, birds, reptiles. 1 – 2 hours.
  5. 13:30 — Lunch. At the restaurant or picnic tables.
  6. 14:30 — Boat safari. Calm half-hour past gibbon and pelican islands.
  7. 15:00 — Bus safari (optional). If you skipped the auto-safari, take the bus now. Otherwise visit the keeper talk you marked at the start.
  8. 16:30 — Last walk. Animals start to wake up — great light for photography. Leave 30 minutes before closing.
